Give Your Closet A Reset With These Fall Outfits

The Central Coast heat wave that arrives every year is a surprise we will never get used to. We never truly experience a typical autumn when it’s more than 80 degrees outside, so we have to dress as if it’s summer. The weather cools a bit in November, though, giving us some wiggle room to add thicker fabrics to our outfits. We’re yearning for knit sweaters, thick socks and cozy sweatpants.

One of our favorite fall styling techniques is layering. Think cardigans under heavy jackets or a long-sleeve shirt under a sweater vest for different textures. Anything chic and cozy is a win in our fashion book. We enjoy our fair share of matching sweatsuits, but we love dressing up for fall, too. We take inspiration from Pinterest and ’90s rom-coms such as “You’ve Got Mail,” “Notting Hill” and “When Harry Met Sally.” We wish we still lived in a time when people dressed in business casual with oversized blazers, plaid pants and turtlenecks. This autumn, we want to channel our best Meg Ryan and Sandra Bullock outfits. If you’re looking for a closet refresh, here are some outfits we’re wearing for inspiration.

Plaid skirts and oversized sweaters

Neutral earth tones such as brown, green and orange are standard fall colors. Working them into your wardrobe can level up your outfits in a small way. Whether they show up in your sweaters, socks or pants, they can put you in a good fall mood. Plaid in those colors is an easy way to add them to your closet, and the pattern pairs with almost any top. Our favorite way to wear plaid is a skirt with an oversized sweater layered over a T-shirt that peeks out from underneath. Pair the look with knee-high boots and knee-high socks for extra coziness.

Striped long sleeves with colorful pants

The simplest way to put together a fall outfit is to wear pants that aren’t denim. Play with fabric and color to build your fall wardrobe. A brown wash keeps things safe with neutrals, while forest green brings in a different earth tone. Choose a fabric you feel comfortable wearing, such as canvas in a utility pant or nylon in a cargo style.

Style the pants with a striped long-sleeve top. Stripes are trendy right now, and they elevate a casual outfit whether worn as a cardigan, button-up or pullover. Complete the look with flats or Mary Janes.

Layering cardigans with jackets

Layering is essential for fall because the weather is so unpredictable. A thick sweater under a jacket can look bulky, so a thinner, lightweight cardigan is perfect for layering. Even a slightly heavier cardigan looks good under a jacket if you leave it unbuttoned to show your undershirt.

Classic jeans with Ugg boots

One outfit that never fails in autumn is denim jeans, an oversized hoodie and Ugg boots for ultimate comfort. When we’re running late to meet friends on a chill night, we throw on this outfit to save a few minutes. Add accessories such as a beanie, scarf and earrings to look a little more put together. Adding color through your accessories earns bonus cute points.

Corduroy pants with a leather jacket

If you’re not a fan of colorful pants, try a fun fabric such as corduroy. Corduroy pants are super comfy for fall and can be paired with anything in your closet. Because corduroy is not a traditional choice, it can be fun to find ways to dress it up. Wearing corduroy pants with a leather jacket and boots mixes materials and styles. White corduroy pants with a brown or black leather jacket are chic. For a moodier look, swap the white for dark brown or navy blue and the black jacket for a darker option. You can also play with the pant style. Try ankle-length, wide-leg corduroys with loafers for a preppy look.
